“I Love the Humanities Because…”
Celebration Slated Tuesday, Sept. 29th
50 years ago, members of Congress, academics and writers gathered in the White House Rose Garden for what today seems an unlikely event. On September 29, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed a bill creating The National Endowment for the Humanities as an independent federal agency. NEH has gone on to be one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States.
Because democracy demands wisdom, NEH serves and strengthens our republic by promoting excellence in the humanities and conveying the lessons of history to all Americans. The Endowment accomplishes this mission by awarding grants for top-rated proposals examined by panels of independent, external reviewers.
NEH grants typically go to cultural institutions, such as museums, archives, libraries, colleges, universities, public television, and radio stations, and to individual scholars.
Here in Pennsylvania, the Rose Garden act spawned the creation of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, which has been a force in strengthening and extending the reach of humanities programs and education throughout the Commonwsealth.
