True Confessions: I Used Kanopy This Weekend and Loved It
October 27, 2020
Happy spooky almost-Halloween! Over the weekend, I found myself wanting to watch a Halloween movie. The parameters were simple: not too scary, something I could stream, a movie I hadn’t seen before. I ended up doing a search for “Not-Too-Scary-Halloween-Movies” and found a blurb for “What We Do in the Shadows” which said: “Housemates Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, & Jonathan Brugh) are three vampires who are trying to get by in modern society; from paying rent and doing housework to trying to get invited into nightclubs. They are just like anyone else – except they’re immortal and must feast on human blood. When their 8000 year-old roommate Petyr, turns 20-something human hipster Nick, into a vampire, the guys must guide him through his newfound eternal life.”
Perfect! Taika Waititi is one of my favorite actors and it seemed like a funny-enough premise to keep me engaged. But, I had no way to stream it. The services I subscribe to were only offering it to rent and I didn’t want to do that. I visited the website justwatch.com as a last ditch effort and was thrilled to see that it was available on Kanopy! I logged into my account on my phone, linked my TV to my account, and began streaming the movie immediately. I am thrilled to report the movie did not disappoint – it was not too scary, I laughed immensely, and I never had to leave my couch to watch it.
I hope this tale encourages you take advantage of Kanopy. There are a slew of Halloween movies on the platform, as well as indie choices, foreign films, and so many more. Create an account for free with your library card and start streaming today. Happy watching!
