Recommended Read: “Crying in H Mart” by Michelle Zauner

Sometimes you come across a book that stops you in your tracks. Recently for me, it was Michelle Zauner’s Crying in H Mart – a memoir which details her relationship with food, family, and culture. Zauner, who you might know by the moniker, Japanese Breakfast, shares the raw reality of her life in the mid-2000s when she was caring for her mother who was battling cancer. Zauner, who is half-Korean, writes about her relationship with food, which often intertwines with her desire to cook meals for her ailing mother or work through her own feelings of grief.
This book is a beautiful meditation on family, especially mother-daughter relationships. It was a gentle reminder to love and make the most of the time we have with those we care for while we are able. If you are looking for a great read, I can’t recommend this one enough. It is gorgeous and generous.
