Pre-Code Film Series Continues Thursday, April 9th at 6:30 PM with Demille’s “Madam Satan”
April 7, 2015
Albright Memorial Library continues its Pre-Code Classic Film Series on Thursday, April 9th at 6:30 PM (special time) with Cecil B. DeMille’s 1930 epic Madam Satan.
A man is bewitched by the mysterious Madam Satan (Kay Johnson, who is also the mother of actor James Cromwell) he meets at a lavish masquerade ball. Does this mean the end of his marriage to the demure spouse he left at home? Not likely, because the temptress is really his wife in disguise! Cecil B. DeMille directs this pre-Code musical extravaganza about a wife who teaches her errant husband a lesson in love. The risqué plot is a hoot, but what really makes this film is its can-you-believe-it production values: the ball, held on a giant zeppelin, features a balletic salute to electricity, complete with human spark plugs — and a party-ending bolt of lightning that renders the airship flightless, sending the revelers leaping for their lives. (Amazingly, the actors do their own stunts.)
Early birds will be treated to classic Looney Tunes shorts starting at 6 PM.
The Classic Pre-Code film series is being sponsored by The Friends of Scranton Public Library, who are also generously providing refreshments.
All screenings in the Pre-Code Classic Film Series are free with your library card, but seating is limited and registration is strongly suggested.
