Albright Celebrates Milestone

Library Opened Its Doors in 1893

Scranton was a boom town in 1890 when John J. Albright proposed the creation of a public library for the City.

His proposal resulted in the library that would bear his name opening its doors in 1893.

Now, 125 year later, Mr. Albright’s dream lives on, even physically, as anyone who has visited the Library since its recent refurbishment knows.

In an editorial marking the anniversary, The Scranton Times-Tribune said “[Mr.] Albright likely would be pleased that the library continues to fulfill his vision, whether at the magnificent library headquarters at Vine Street and North Washington Avenue named for him, or through the library’s physical and digital outreach efforts…He likely would be especially pleased that Scrantonians, across generations, have embraced his vision.”
