Alzheimer’s Outreach

July 16, 2015

Since February, the Abington Community Library has been providing outreach services to a local Alzheimer’s unit. Knowing that some Alzheimer patients can recall stories that they heard as children, we often read fairy tales such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Little Red Riding Hood.  We found that the patients also enjoy listening to and joining in as we recite nursery rhymes like Twinkle Little Star, One Two Buckle My Shoe, and Baa Baa Black Sheep. And recently, we added songs to entertain the patients. This Land is Your Land, Clementine, and She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain are among their favorites.  Hearing the men and women respond with “I remember that song” and ” My mother read me that story when I was a little girl,” makes the time we spend with these special people who are battling a difficult disease very worthwhile.
