The Lackawanna County Library System’s newly redesigned website is truly a “virtual library” where you can go to do things at home on your computer or away from home on a mobile device. The new website incorporates “responsive design,” which means that it can be viewed effectively on computer screens, smartphones and tablets.
Want to download an eBook, learn a language or find out what events are scheduled at any of the county’s 10 libraries? You can do it here!
While physical books remain the domain of physical libraries, downloadable eBooks have become increasingly popular among library patrons. The Library System now has more than 4,500 digital books in its collection and continues to add to more.
Audio books is another category that is changing. Lackawanna County libraries used to stock audio books on cassette tape. That medium gave way to CDs, and now people are downloading audio books directly from the library system’s website.
In addition to eBooks and audio books, the “Virtual Library” offers a wealth of digital resources that are easy to find and use.
Designed with function foremost in mind, the new website brings to the homepage portals to its most popular features. First among the top menu items is “My LCLS,” which opens a dropdown menu giving users access to their library account and the library catalog listing the more than 500,000 items in the Library System’s collections.
Also at “My LCLS,” library patrons can place a hold on a book they want to borrow, renew items already checked out, and check up on library news.
Other top menu items highlight resources just for children and another for teens. Links to each of the Library System’s 10 community libraries and Bookmobile are available there on a dropdown menu.
Below the top menu are the features that make the website a true virtual library. Click on “Downloads” and you land on a page where eBooks and audio books can be acquired. “Learn” opens the door to resources as various as language instruction, tutoring services, auto mechanics, cooking, health resources and more.
Take some time to browse around. You might find something that you can use but never knew that the Library had available online.
