Breast Cancer Literacy Begins @ the Library

One in eight women in America will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. Every year, 220,000 women are told that they have the disease and 40,000 die of it. The good news is that death rates from breast cancer are declining due to screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options.

A key to breast cancer survival is Health Literacy, a goal of Lackawanna County Library System and libraries throughout the state who are part of the PA Forward initiative. Here are just a few of the resources available to help women and their families understand the disease:

LIBRARY CATALOG: Visit any Lackawanna County Library to use a computer or select “Catalog” above. Enter “Breast Cancer” in the search box and browse through the results.

CONSUMER HEALTH COMPLETE: The best place on the internet for information about health includes full text articles from health reference books and encyclopedias. Select “Find” above and click “eResources.” What you want is under “Research.”

MASTER FILE: Full text articles from over 1,700 reference resources, magazines and journals on all general interest subject areas including health. Select “Find” above and click “eResources.” What you want is under “Research.”

Remember, Health Literacy begins at the Library.
