National Library Week
April 19, 2020
Today libraries across the country begin to celebrate National Library Week 2020. The celebration, created by the American Library Association in 1958, highlights the significant roles libraries play in our lives and communities. This year’s theme is “Find Your Place at the Library.” While the theme may seem ironic, given the current situation, it also shows how libraries continue to stay relevant even without a physical building being open.
In the past few months, libraries have ramped up their virtual services to provide information, entertainment, and learning resources to their patrons. Librarians have joined celebrities and authors in reading to children through videos. Library suppliers have expanded their online resources so that they would be more widely accessible to the public. For those who do not have internet access at home, libraries have left their Wi-Fi on in the hopes that it will help their communities stay connected and informed.
It has been a challenge and, though the doors are not currently open, we hope patrons can still find a place in the library through our virtual services. Along with the services we have been providing through our website, here are some things to look forward to from the Carbondale Public Library during National Library Week:
Library BINGO: Check out our library-themed BINGO cards available on the website and Facebook. Challenge yourself to complete a row or the whole board. The cards are Child, Teen, and Adult oriented so the whole family can participate.
Arts and Crafts: The staff of the Carbondale Library have put together tutorials for some literary themed crafts.
Digital Escape Room: Can you solve its puzzles and make it out of The Cave? Find out this Friday!
Online Storytime and other videos.
Finally, the staff of the Carbondale Public Library just want to say “thank you” to all of our patrons. As hard as it has been, it’s been amazing to see the community come together even when we have to stay apart.
