The City of Scranton and all of Northeastern Pennsylvania relied on the Anthracite coal industry for many years. Cities and towns grew with a large immigrant population, many of whom worked in the mines. People from around the world can trace ancestors through Northeast PA. Recently five Pennsylvania Senators from the Northeast designated July 16th as Anthracite Heritage Day in Pennsylvania. Let’s remember all the men, women, and children who lived and worked around the anthracite mines. The Reference Department and Circulation have many books about anthracite coal. Below are a few of the many titles we have as well as a link to an article about Anthracite Heritage Day.
