November Is American Diabetes Month

October 29, 2014

Health Literacy Begins @ the Library

Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Another 86 million Americans are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetes Association estimates that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to stop it.

November is American Diabetes Month. The Diabetes Association hopes to raise awareness and understanding of diabetes, its consequences, management and prevention.

If you or someone in your family has diabetes, take the time this month to find out what you can do to mitigate the ravages of the disease. You can start at the Library.

Use the Library website to find out what treatments are available for those with diabetes and steps you can take to avoid developing the type 2 variant of the disease.

This year the Association is focusing the food we eat and its connection to diabetes. At Lackawanna County libraries, we have lots of cook books on our shelves that can teach you healthy meal planning or you can go online to find practical, hands-on tips for preparing “good-for-you dishes” that taste great.

You can get more information about American Diabetes Month from the American Diabetes Association.
