“Scranton Reads” American Classic

It’s a book that many of us grew up with, the first novel that touched many of us on an emotional level. But J.D. Salinger’s novel also kicked up a storm of controversy because, while it was clearly loved by adolescents, it offered frank descriptions of teenage depression, alienation and budding sexuality that school authorities and parents objected to.
Now it’s the 2015 selection for “Scranton Reads”, a community reading event. The idea of getting people in a community to read the same book at the same time began in Seattle in 1998. The program’s aim was to help build a sense of community and promote literacy. Since then it has spread to communities throughout the country.
The idea came to Scranton in 2002 and every year since it has been held in October. Activities during the month include book discussions and special events related to the chosen work.
This year’s kickoff will feature readings from books banned or challenged in their time. Participants are encouraged to being their favorite banned books to read from.
